GPD’s Power Team has continued to grow organically due to our stellar reputation in the industry and is excited to add an Entry-Level Civil Engineer to our Power Utility team in our Columbus, OH office. GPD Group works directly with the communities we serve for power allocation and energy innovation.  This person would share a passion for becoming a technical expert in high voltage transmission and power utility design and reinforce a culture that prides itself on high quality design innovation and problem-solving and servant leadership that fuels opportunity creation for the team.  Our Power Group is all about looking ahead into the future and ensuring that our high-quality designs and innovative way of approaching work fuels safe communities in the Ohio and Pennsylvania regions we serve.
Role Qualifications:
A Power Utility Engineer will be responsible for the Activities include site walks, computer modeling, sizing of structures and transmission line components, designing foundations, coordinating with survey/Geotech/manufacturers, creating bill of materials, communication with internal and external project managers, applying customary engineering design principles and critical thinking.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology.
- Pursuit of or have passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Understanding of design software to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs. Â Experience with PLS CADD and AutoCAD a plus.
- Interest and/or experience with tower structures (pole, lattice, guyed).
- Ability to comprehend and interpret safety codes, utility standards and regulations (NESC, ASCE, IEEE).
- Basic knowledge in design, calculations, and design systems.
- Basic knowledge in the theory and practices of engineering discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability to develop estimates and budgets.
Day-to-day Job Responsibilities:
- Assist in design of high voltage (69 kV to 345 kV) transmission lines using PLS-CADD.
- Creation of comprehensive drawing packages within the utility infrastructure industry for transmission line systems.
- Mentorship under professional power engineers.
- Participating in site walks for current projects. Â Less than 10% travel.
- Perform computer modeling and sizing of structures and transmission line components.
- Coordinating with Survey/Geotech/Manufacturers.
- Assist in preparing engineering drawings from rough sketches or from general engineering and design information (verbal instructions and notes) using CAD software programs.
- Assist with a full range of drawing production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
- Assist with a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.
- Assist with initial rough designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.
- Assist with analyzing reports, drawings, and tests, to plan and design projects.
- Apply design codes and specifications related to design requirements.
- Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget and schedule. Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.
- Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into transmission design and layouts.
- Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.
- All other duties as assigned.
