Role & Duties:

Tetra Tech is seeking an Engineer – Junior Level for a full-time entry level Engineering Position, working out of our Chantilly, VA office. The chosen candidate will work on a project out of Jacksonville, FL from December 2024 through September 2026, with a possibility of up to five additional months on the project based on the construction schedule.

The chosen candidate will assist with on-site construction Quality Assurance (QA) and Health & Safety oversight support for an approximately $45M Environmental Remedial Action Project (former Kerr McGee superfund site on the St Johns River). They will provide QA oversight and prepare daily reports of remedial action activities to include, but not limited to: in-situ soil mixing, land surface capping, stormwater systems, dredging, groundwater treatment system installation, and sheet-pile wall construction. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn many skills related to construction and environmental remediation management during their tenure.

The candidate will work under a registered Professional Engineer. Time worked in this rule will count towards the time required to obtain a P.E. registration and provide one of the required P.E. references.

Work hours will be between 8 to 10 hours per day, 5 days per week, with occasional weekend work on an as-needed basis. Applicant must pass a physical exam, mandatory pre-employment drug screening, and pass a motor vehicle records check to be eligible for this role. OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER and First Aid/CPR Certification will be provided upon hire.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering, or another relevant field.
  • 0 to 5 years’ experience in environmental consulting or construction oversight.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Project, Excel, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Ability to work the entirety of the project’s duration.
  • Must be able to drive a motor vehicle and pass a motor vehicle records check.
  • Must be able to provide transportation to project sites.
  • Have the capacity, willingness, and ability to manage a 50-hour/week workload and work weekends on an as-needed basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in any of the following fields are a plus: remedial design; feasibility studies, hazardous waste; site investigations; site remediation; field sampling; air quality; ecological restoration; water resources.
  • Previous experience working on EPA projects.
  • AutoCad, GIS data analysis and geo-statistics, coding (VBA, Python, etc.), and data management skills.
  • Self-driven, with an eagerness to learn all aspects of field engineering.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, the general public, elected officials, business leaders, and a variety of other stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, client interaction, and organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated, customer focused, and work well in a team environment.

Work Environment

The position's primary work environment is a mix of office and fieldwork.

The position requires occasional travel to client sites and other locations to conduct meetings, site visits, etc.  These sites may be outside, exposing the candidate to weather conditions and varying terrain.  Site visits or other meetings may involve long periods of time in a motor vehicle.  Some occasional evening and/or weekend work and/or travel will be required.

The position requires the ability to conduct field work, where the candidate will need to carry field equipment (typically between 30 to 40 pounds) and don personal protective gear as needed. Work in outdoor areas occurs during all seasons and weather.
