Controls Engineer
Job description
The Controls Engineer is responsible for providing controls hardware engineering, software engineering, and leadership to the project team that is delivering “turnkey” custom automation equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Lead meeting with customer and project manager to understand project requirements.
- Design electrical and pneumatic controls designs utilizing AutoCAD Electrical for drawing development.
- Develop a bill of controls materials, seeking cost estimates for purchasing department – work with project management to get parts ordered on time.
- Responsible for designing the interconnections of peripheral hardware, such as but not limited to, servo motors, Vision, Robots, leak test systems, LVDT’s, data collection systems. Â
- Work closely with controls build department on the wiring and plumbing of equipment.
- Develop the system software architecture.
- Write the control system software.
- Develop Human to Machine Interface (HMI) programs and integrate with the control system.
- Responsible for integrating and/or programming peripheral hardware and software, such as but not limited to, servo motors, Vision, Robots, leak test systems, LVDT’s, data collection systems. Â
- Debug the system hardware and software.
- Run factory acceptance test at customer facility.
- Support the installation of the equipment.
- Debug at customer’s site if necessary.
- Adhere to established control standards and procedures.
- Observe safety procedures.
OTHER DUTIES
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Any other task assigned by management within scope of position, federal and state regulations.
Requirements
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in related engineering field.
- Familiar with programming and hardware, including but not limited to
Hardware Experience:
- AutoCAD Electrical - design
- SISTEMA safety calculations
- SCCR calculations
- Documentation and Certifications (CE, UL, CSA, CCC)
- Power calculations (AC 3 Phase, AC Single Phase, DC 5-90 volts, Power Transformation (Step down, Step Up Isolation)).
- Enclosure heat calculations
- Pneumatic Design and flow calculations (SMC, Numatics, Festo)
- Fluid design and flow calculations
Programming Experience:
- PLC's, HMI’s and Motion Control
- Allen Bradley – Studio 5000
- Siemens – TIA Portal
- Omron – Sysmac Studio
- Robots (Epson, Fanus, ABB, Staubli)
- Vision System (Cognex, Keyence, Matrox)
- Industrial Protocols (Ethernet IP, Ethernet TCP/IP, Profinet, EtherCat).
- SQL Database integration for product traceability
- Other peripheral devices
- Leak Testers
- Lasers (welding and marking)
- Force and Displacement monitoring
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Effective verbal and written communication. Â
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical procedures.
- Ability to work in decimal, octal hexadecimal, and binary numbering systems. Â
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry and to calculate scaling factors, proportions, percentages, rates, and ratios.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Â
